At least 15 injured in train derailment in Egypt

Several people have been injured as a train heading to Sohag derailed and at least two of its cars overturned in Giza, Cairo’s twin city, local media have reported. The train reportedly caught fire after derailing.

There are conflicting reports about the number of casualties. According to English Ahram English-language news website Ahmed El-Ansary, head of the Egyptian Ambulance Organization, said that four passengers had been injured but that no one had been killed while Egyptian National Railways head Hani Hegab told state-run news agency MENA that the accident had resulted in deaths.

Reuters reported 15 injured and Al Jazeera 70.

A source at the Egyptian Railways Authority blamed passengers for the incident saying that angry passengers whose train had to make an extra stop positioned blocks on the track leading to the collision.
