President Barack Obama has declared a "major disaster" in New York State, after "Superstorm" Sandy battered the Eastern coast of the United State on Monday and Tuesday killing at least 34 people.
Overnight a power plant station located on the east side of Manhattan exploded, leaving ten of thousands of New Yorkers without power. A fire, which started Monday night, destroyed at least 50 homes in Breezy point, in the New York borough of Queens. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The mammoth and merciless storm knocked down dozens of trees and power lines including in The Bronx. The facade of a building also collapsed in New York due to strong winds. There were no reports of casualties
Torrential rains inundated parts of Lower Manhattan, but also surrounding states such as New Jersey - including Hoboken and Newport - and Rhode Island.
Up to 50,000 millions people could be affected by the storm.
