In Pictures: US braced as Hurricane Sandy approaches

Millions are braced for Hurricane Sandy, expected to hit the US East Coast on Monday. 

 

The latest statement on the progress of Hurrican Sandy includes the warning that the storm is:

EXPECTED TO BRING LIFE-THREATENING STORM SURGE AND COASTAL HURRICANE WINDS PLUS HEAVY APPALACHIAN SNOWS.

New York City is on virtual lockdown with offices, shops and train stations closed. Beaches have been closed, and people are advised to stay inside. 

Photographs have been shared on social media showing grocery stores with empty shelves, deserted streets, and severe flooding as the storm approaches.
