Rotherham locals concerned ahead of Saturday EDL demo

Locals have continued to raise concerns over the English Defence League's planned demonstration on Saturday in Rotherham, despite the march being allowed to go ahead by the authorities.

The controversial far right group will march through the South Yorkshire town, while at the same time a counter demonstrations organised by Unite Against Fascism and Rotherham residents will also take place. Trade unions, anti-fascists, faith groups and concerned locals came together at a packed public meeting on Monday to plan the town's peaceful counter-protest. It is clear that the controversial far-right group are not welcome in the town, especially as their recent demonstrations in Walthamstow and Walsall descended into violence with clashes with police and multiple arrests.

Pat Keenan, president of Rotherham Trades Council, said: “The overwhelming majority of people reject the EDL’s attempt to use racism to divide our society."

The EDL's planned march route ends just 50 yards from a mosque, which locals see as a blatant provocation, and the likely scene of disturbances. Sheffield PCS rep Martin Hickman said "They are going to do everything they can to provoke an incident. Marching right next to a mosque, you couldn't have a worse act of provocation."

Although around 200 EDL supporters are expected to attend the demonstration in Rotherham, the counter-demo is anticipated to be much larger.

Distaste for the group, and anger at their imminent descent on the town has been expressed on social media:
