Now unemployed Remploy workers are demonstrating outside the Tory Party Conference on Wednesday over the closure of 36 factories resulting in compulsory redundancy for over 1,500 disabled people.
GMB national officer Phil Davies said:
“We intend to bring home to Conservative activists the harsh reality of decisions made by this government to close Remploy factories and the cynical way ministers used disabled charities to throw disabled workers out of work."
In a petition to stop the closure of factories, GMB Union describe Remploy as:
'being the largest and the oldest employer of disabled people in Britain is not only a workplace but a way of life for thousands of disabled people who want sustainable employment of their choice.'
The decision to close the majority of the factories was met with harsh criticism, and the demonstration on Wednesday intends to highlight the hypocrisy of the Conservative Party and their alleged intentions to help disabled people.
