Sri Lanka: Journalists hold 'Black January' media freedom protest

Azzam Ameen

Journalists in Sri Lanka have gathered in the capital, Colombo, to participate in a so-called 'Black January' protest, to commemorate slain colleagues, and oppose media censorship in the small island nation.

Reports from the protest suggest that around 100 journalists are participating, holding banners with the photographs of killed journalists, and banners calling for greater press freedom, and claiming that the killers of their colleagues are still free.

The murder, disappearance and exile of journalists in Sri Lanka has put the country close to the bottom of the international press freedom list.
