Sudanese activist summoned for questioning after raid on house

Sudanese activist “Mimz” was summoned for questioning on Wednesday morning after her house was raided on Tuesday night by 12 National Intelligence and Security Services (NISS) officers, including 2 armed agents, it has been reported. After the raid, “Mimz” wrote on her twitter account that her phone and laptop had been confiscated and that she had been taken to the NISS offices. "Mimz" was interrogated for several hours last Thursday after she was arrested near the University of Khartoum along with Bloomberg correspondent Salma el-Wardany who has been deported by Sudanese authorities on Tuesday for covering the protests in the capital. “Mimz” is a member of the Girifna youth movement, which was particularly involved in the protests against austerity measures that have shaken the country over the past 10 days. Girifna describes itself as a non-violent resistance movement. The group campaigns against the current regime whose president Omar al-Bashir came to power in 1989 after a military coup. On June 16, students took to the streets of the Sudanese capital after Bashir announced a series of austerity measures. The movement gained momentum as the days passed spreading to key towns before slowing down after a security crackdown on Saturday. However, activists have continued to try to use discontent over the economy to build a broader movement to end Bashir's 23-year rule. Two important protests have been planned for the next few days, a demonstration on June 29 after the Friday prayers and a general strike on June 30 to mark the 23rd anniversary of the military coup that brought Bashir into power.
