India's 66th Independence Day was celebrated on Wednesday. 15 August, is a holiday commemorating India's independence from the British rule and its birth as a sovereign nation in 1947. India achieved independence following the Indian independence movement noted for largely peaceful nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience led by the Indian National Congress. On Thursday Ecuador announced they they would grant Wikileaks founder Julian Assange asylum, following threats from the UK government that they would enter the embassy and arrest Assange. Protesters gathered outside the embassy including members of Anonymous, wearing their signature masks and holding 'I'm Julian' signs. 

Six people were arrested on Thursday night after staging a sit-in in Barack Obama's campaign headquarters in Oakland, California. A video shared by Scott Olsen, an Iraq War veteran seriously injured by a police projectile during an Occupy Oakland protest on October 25, showed "pushing, shoving and brandishing of chairs" as the protesters tried to sit down in the middle of the office.
