Plaid Cymru Leader Nominations to Close

[title]

Welsh branch and constituencies have until tonight to send their nominations for the leader of Plaid Cymru.

Results will be announced on March 15, right before the party spring conference.

Four are the candidates who hope to become the new party leader: Elin Jones, Lord Elis-Thomas, Simon Thomas and Leanne Wood.

Until yesterday, polls were giving Elin Jones as the favourite. An online bookmark, Paddy Power, revealed Leanne Wood is now at the top of the list, “but it’s looking tough for the men.” The new party leader will replace current leader Ieuan Wyn Jones.

Among the challenges to be faced by the new leader are the hot issues of independence, education and economy. Plaid Cymru critised the Labour performance in Wales.

“Labour should be ashamed of their record of delivery in the eight months since they formed the Welsh government, says Plaid Cymru AM Bethan Jenkins.

She adds:

“In education, health, the economy and local government they have delivered nothing of value.”

Tonight is also the deadline for new members who want to join the party and take part in the vote.
