A worn pair of underpants, belonging to the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph have been sold at auction in Vienna for $8,000, twice the amount they were expected to reach.
Franz Joseph was the Emperor of Austria, King of Bohemia, King of Croatia, Apostolic King of Hungary, King of Galicia and Lodomeria and Grand Duke of Cracow from 1848 until his death in 1916.
The 1894 pants have the emperor’s initials, embroidered by the Royal Household laundry, and this particular pair were designed for horse riding.
The auction included other royal items including underwear belonging to Empress Elisabeth, known as Sisi, however having never been worn they fetched half the amount at $4,000. Silverware that used to belong to Emperor Ferdinand I, went for $71,000, and a ceremonial staff for the Hungarian Royal Crown reached $79,000.
