Mother of baby killed by falling lamppost criticises 'accidental death' verdict

The grieving mother of a baby killed by a falling lamppost has criticised west London coroner, Elizabeth Pygott, for refusing to hear evidence about who was responsible for the death.

11-month-old Tommy Hollis died after sustaining fatal head injuries when a lamppost fell on his pushchair on 23 February 2010. Days before the incident a workman had cut the foundations of the lamppost, the plate had become exposed after a trench was dug during a road widening scheme outside Chiswick Town Hall for the local council.

Kate Hollis said that 'crucial witnesses' were not called to the inquest into the death, including the workman. It is also alleged that jurors at West London Coroner's Court were prevented from saying who they thought was to blame for the tragedy after being ordered to return a verdict of accidental death.

The family have vowed to take their case to the civil courts to secure justice for their son.
