There’s nothing better than having a gem on your doorstep – well I say a gem but this is one that I am happy to share with everyone.
The Laughing Gravy is one of Southwark’s hidden restaurants that has fast become a firm favourite with politicians, presenters and actors, counting Ed Balls, Stephanie Flanders and David Attenborough and now me among its loyal regular visitors.
I had my first meal there last Valentine’s evening (a night I’d certainly like to forget as whilst I dined, I received a phone call telling me I’ve lost an aunt to cancer). Anyway I digress. That was certainly not my last visit. I have had a number of boy’s dinner nights out that certainly opted for the Laughing Gravy simply because it was local, the staff are extremely friendly and hospitable, the food is sublime (compliments to the chef), and the wine list is reasonably priced.
The Laughing Gravy also supports local businesses by executing its own social responsibility and green initiatives such as the use of good quality fish for specials rather – saving them from being discarded by fishermen; stocking beer brewed at a local brewery in London Bridge; buying the herbs, fruit and vegetables from the Tate sponsored garden on Webber Street, SE1; supporting local artists by displaying art pieces available for sale.
And while you wait for your Sunday roast, take a moment to browse through the book shelves bought from a local charity shop. The books can be exchanged with another in a “Book Swap”.
Jon Wise, the current owner, commented: "we work as hard as possible to create a warm, inviting environment for our customers. Choosing the right staff, from chefs to front of house is integral to the business. We want people to feel relaxed and looked after but without too much fuss.
"The past year has been an incredible learning curve for me and my team and we now hope to build on our successes to create a solid reputation and build a brand identity that, in time, we can take to a second location."
So there you have it. If you want to book a romantic, family or friendly dinner, check out the Laughing Gravy which I give 10/10.
