Body
One day it may takeover the revenue generation from the Barclays Premier League, but for the moment, the Indian Premier League needs to take a back seat and just enjoy the attention its currently getting. On Tuesday evening a galaxy of stars, including legendary Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachachan and American pop star Katy Perry, performed on stage, will set the ball rolling for the fifth edition of IPL. For the next 54 days, nine teams will be competing for the coveted prize of the best 20/20 team. A host of stars from all corners of the cricket world will be taking part. In the past Shane Warne has led his team through his captaincy and coaching to victory, as has Indian captain MS Dhoni on two occasions. Having proved its success in the past four editions with growing popularity, all nine team captains took to the MCC Spirit of Cricket pledge at the opening gala. The tournament will kick off on tomorrow in what many say will be the final with holders Chennai Super Kings taking on last years Champions League winners Mumbai Indians in the inaugural match at MA Chidambaram stadium. Sponsorships from around the world have spent many millions of dollars on the tournament but this year the approach has been different. “There is a serious need to refresh it as IPL as a product is becoming a bit tired. It’s not as serious a product as Wimbledon or the English Premier League. There seems to be no excitement about IPL now,” says Sandeep Goyal, chairman, Mogae Group, and founder-chairman, Dentsu India told the Outlook magazine.
