A murder enquiry has been launched following the death of a man in Orpington.

Police were called at 0330 on Tuesday 5 June to reports of a man collapsed in Court Road, Orpington.

The 21 year old man was taken by ambulance to Royal London Hospital, where he died that evening.

He has now been formally identified as James Harris Durkin, 17/1/1991, unemployed of Eastbourne.

A post-mortem held at the Princess Royal Hospital mortuary on 7 June gave cause of death as a deep brain bleed linked to blunt force trauma.

James, a father of three children, had travelled from Eastbourne to Orpington to attend a funeral and on Monday 4 June he attended a Jubilee
celebration barbeque with friends and family in Court Road. He was assaulted in the early hours of Tuesday 5 June before being found collapsed in the road.

There were a number of people at the party which was in an area of adjoining residential premises. There were also, despite the early hours of the assault, people in the area either going to or returning from work in a part of Orpington that incorporates a busy road at the junction with Court Road and Lower Road which is in close proximity to the shops at Carlton Parade and Priory Park.

An incident room has been opened at Lewisham Police Station under DCI Cliff Lyons of the Homicide and Serious Crime Command.
