Hundreds of Bahrainis gathered on Wednesday for the funeral of an elderly man who activists say died after inhaling tear gas used by Bahraini forces against pro-democracy protesters.

The man, identified as Haj Mahdi Ali Marhun, reportedly spent the last two months in hospital after regime forces fired tear gas into his house in Ma'ameer, a village south of Manama.

Last month activists claimed 59-year-old Haj Hassan Abdullah Ali died after inhaling tear gas fired tear gas by Bahraini forces inside his home in Sitra.

In August, Physicians for Human Rights (PHR), a non-profit human rights organization, published a 60-page report titled “Weaponizing Tear Gas: Bahrain’s Unprecedented Use of Toxic Chemical Agents Against Civilians” in which it highlighted the continuing use of tear gas in the Gulf island which has resulted in the “maiming, blinding, and even killing of civilian protesters.”

Tear gas has been used as a tool by the Bahraini regime to suppress pro-democracy protests across the country.

The Gulf nation has been experiencing turmoil for more than a year. The Shi'ite community, which constitutes the majority of the Bahraini population, say they feel marginalized by the Sunni ruling family and demand democratic reforms.

Rights organisations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have repeatedly called on the regime to end all attacks on civilians and to suspend its use of tear gas and to conduct an impartial investigation of tear gas misuse.

According to activists, at least 80 people have been killed since the uprising began. This number cannot be verified as foreign media and rights organizations are regularly denied entry into the country.
