Brighton Sainsbury's evacuated after man locks himself in toilet with 'bomb' and 'gun'

Sainsburys supermarket on Lewes Road in Brighton was evacuated after a man locked himself in the toilet and claimed to have a gun and a bomb. Police were called at 2.15pm.

Sussex Police said in a statement: "The claim has not been verified at this stage...Police are on the scene containing the situation in order to ensure that there is no danger to the public or staff, and are establishing contact with the man."

The cordon surrounding the supermarket was extended at 4.30pm. Heavy traffic was reported in the area as cars and buses were diverted away from the ongoing incident.

Eyewitnesses reported that there were 4 police vans and 2 fire engines at the scene.

Negotiators talked to the man, from Essex, who was arrested at about 7:40pm. No weapons were found.
