The English Defence League marched in Luton today but the turnout was much lower than the group expected with estimates of around 500 people present for the far-right group. EDL leader Tommy Robinson gave a speech as did other senior members. Police made 1 arrest and some EDL members were throwing fireworks on Park Street. The British Freedom Party announced on Twitter that Tommy Robinson would become the deputy leader. There was no major incidents as the police had organised a very efficient police operation but it was reported that medics had been called to a man on the ground who was hit by a bottle. Mr Robinson told the crowd "I don't care if they call us racists, we have truth on our side". Police also began pulling over and searching the EDL coaches. During the demo the group began pelting police with bottles and cans. Eyewitnesses and residents said they saw the EDL stood around on Park Street shouting racially abusive chants whilst some said the EDL had been kettled on a roundabout.
Bedfordshire Police say the following key town centre routes will be closed to traffic (but will be open to pedestrians) from 7am until the end of the protests at or around 3pm: * Station Road (and the footpath between Station Road and Bute Street) * Park Street (from its junction with Manor Road as far as the roundabout junction with Church Street) * Church Street (as far as the junction with St Mary’s Road) * Cumberland Street * Chequer Street * Lea Road * Vicarage Street * Chobham Street * St Anne’s Road * Power Court * Collingdon Street * Old Bedford Road by the Galaxy centre * Cheapside * Liverpool Road * Cardigan Street * Inkerman Street * Alma Street * Gordon Street * Wellington Street * King Street * George Street West * Chapel Street (lower end) * Park Street West (lower end)
