East Carolina University is on lockdown as authorities search for a possible gunman. Reports emerged at around 10am of person carrying a gun in area.

Other reports from local news agencies suggest some shots have been fired.

Residence halls and school buildings have been secured as university police sweep the campus looking for the individual, the school said.

UPDATE: The man mistaken for a gunmen was actually carrying a golf umbrella. Dozens of heavily armed officers swept the campus and the buildings, snipers took positions on rooftops and a helicopter circled above. Eventually the man was located and what was thought to be a rifle was an umbrella. Classes were resumed 3 hours after the alert was raised.
