Ferry carrying 250 people capsizes in the Brahmaputra in Assam

According to reports, a ferry carrying about 250 people has capsized on the Brahmaputra river near Fakiragram in west Dhubri district in Assam.

Police say 35 people have died, AP quoted Assam state police chief J.N. Choudhury.

Deputy Commissioner Kumud Chandra Kalita said the boat was crossing the river from the Dhubrighat when it overturned due to storm and heavy rainfall in the area. The police said that nearly 50 people had swum to safety, local media report. The fate of the other passengers was not immediately known.

According to local media, weather conditions are hampering rescue operations.
