India's High Court says 'a wife should be like goddess Sita'

Bombay High Court in Mumbai has said that married women should take note of the goddess Sita who followed her husband Lord Ram even during his exile, during an ongoing divorce case regarding a wife's refusal to relocate for her husband's job.

Justices P B Majmudar and Anoop Mohta said that: "A wife should be like goddess Sita who left everything and followed her husband Lord Ram to a forest and stayed there for 14 years."

The appeal in question was filed by an employee of the Shipping Corporation of India who is seeking divorce from his wife of an arranged marriage, because she was not willing to shift with him to Port Blair where he was transferred.

Following recommending that women follow their husbands regardless of their own preferences, the court also urged the couple to reunite for the sake of their nine-year-old daughter. Any attempt at settlement was rejected by the wife resulting in the adjournment of the case until June 21.
