Russia: disabled man barred from nightclub "so as not to embarrass other visitors"

Aleksander Mokin, 27, had arranged to celebrate his birthday at a nightclub in his hometown of Ekaterinburg, only to be refused entry on arrival.

Aleksander has been using a wheelchair since he suffered a spinal injury two years ago when diving into a lake. Upon booking the venue for his celebrations he informed the manager of his disability and was told he would experience no difficulty at all.

He told Russia's Channel One: "I was stopped by security. They said I was forbidden from entering...I asked for the administrator. A young lady who called herself Polina, the art-director, apologized but said they could not let me in so as not to embarrass other visitors.”

He then argued with staff for over an hour, but security won over, and he was sent away despite his birthday, and his advance booking.

The member of staff who spoke to Aleksander has reportedly been fired, however club's manager failed to offer an explanation.
