UK students to demonstrate in solidarity with Quebec protests

UK students, and supporters of the ongoing protests in Quebec will demonstrate today at 4pm, outside Canada House close to Trafalgar Square to express their solidarity with the students and their opposition to the controversial law introduced by the government limited the right to protest.

The strikes in Quebec, organised by a coalition of student federations, were declared on February 13, and have drawn in more than 190,000 students across the province. The action relates to a proposal by the Quebec Cabinet, headed by Premier Jean Charest, to raise university tuition from $2,168 to $3,793 between 2012 and 2017. Overall fees have increased by 300 per cent since 1989.

The campaigners have said:

'The government, backed by the vocal support of the bosses’ organisations in the national media have done their best to defeat the movement. The students and their federations have seen off government-sponsored scabbing, mass arrests and rubber bullets.'

The last solidarity demonstration in London, held on May 30, brought more than 300 people into the streets. A similar event is taking place in Leeds at 12pm on the main shopping street, Briggate.
